The Weardale Iron and Coal Railway

Derek Newby tells the story of a remote and audacious railway within a desolate and barren landscape.

The Weardale Iron and Coal Company was founded by Charles Attwood in 1840 to exploit iron ore in Weardale. A railway was needed to move the goods to market and so the Weardale Iron and Coal Railway was born.

In this presentation, Derek Newby explores the story from the first railway to arrive in Weardale in 1834, the relationship between the Weardale Iron and Coal Company and the Stockton and Darlington Railway, and the closure of the line in the early 20th century.

It is a story of a remote and audacious railway within a desolate and barren landscape.
