There's fun for all the family at Locomotion this summer. We have taken themes that are important to the rail industry today as inspiration for our FREE family activities.
With something different happening every day, there will always be something to keep everyone in the family entertained. See below for highlights and check our socials for more information.
From Saturday 19 July
Theme: Environmental sustainability.
- Did you know that Locomotion is helping to save an endangered British butterfly? Make your own version in felt to take home and enjoy
- Reduce, re-use, recycle is being adopted everywhere. Join artist Lenny River to see what can be created using junk carboard. What will you make?
- Our site is home to lots of different habitats for friendly creatures from bugs and bees to birds. Join Brightwoods Forest School to create your own mini-beast model.
From Saturday 26 July
Theme: Construction.
• Get your building hat on to think like an engineer and make LEGO creations in Brick Pits
• Be inspired by the incredible LEGO model displays from Brick Alley LEGO User Group
• Follow in the footsteps of North East hero George Stephenson and build a LEGO railway with Bricks McGee
• Keep the construction fun going at the pop-up beach. What will you build?
From Saturday 2 August
Theme: Staying safe on the railway.
- Get creative and design a railway safety poster that packs a real punch
- Join a Brio builds workshop from the Bishop Line Community Rail Partnership focusing on rail safety
From Saturday 9 August
Theme: Pulling power.
- Channel famous locomotive designers such as Timothy Hackworth and Sir Nigel Gresley by designing your own engine using our railway stencils and templates
- Join artist and print maker Littlest Falcon to produce a lino print inspired by our iconic collection
- Create your own jigsaw train to take home with local artist Lenny River
From Saturday 16 August
Theme: Engineering.
- From bridges to tunnels, from locomotives to trucks, let your imagination run wild and have fun building with K'NEX
- Marvel at the limitless possibilities of Meccano and explore the incredible skills of the North East Meccano Society
- Put your engineering skills to the test to create iconic structures from the Stockton & Darlington Railway using specially designed paper model kits with Cabinet of Curiosity
- Have your mind blown at special demonstrations from Big Science
From Saturday 23 August
Theme: Our stories.
- Help us create a giant artwork based on travels and adventures
- Join artist Lenny River at one of our interactive story-telling sessions
- Bring along your favourite furry toy and a picnic for a special Teddy Bears’ Picnic day of storytelling
