Richard Barber returns for the second instalment of his exploration of the S&DR's routes.
This presentation will look at the expansion of the Stockton & Darlington Railway up to 1830. Looking at first branch lines such as the Black Boy branch, Darlington Depots Branch, the Croft branch (which now forms the oldest operating part of the East Coast Main Line) and the branch to Port Darlington which is today the only branch left intact throughout its length.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Richard Barber was born and brought up in Darlington and his childhood playgrounds included Darlington shed, North Road works and many other railway locations. He was a template maker by trade but became involved as a Welding and Corrosion Inspector on such works as the Humber Bridge, the QE2 Metro bridge across the River Tyne in Newcastle, the Thames Barrier and some of the chemical and nuclear installations around the country and a boiler for a working replica of Rocket.
Retirement has allowed Richard to become a volunteer at Locomotion in the Rail Ops and Conservation teams, and also to put together talks and presentation of the long-gone rail scene.
