Richard Barber explores the history of the S&DR's routes.
As the 200th anniversary of the opening of the S&DR approaches in 2025, this presentation will look at the routes of the Stockton and Darlington railway, looking at not only the routes as we know it, but the routes that could have been taken as a canal, the routes planned and the route which did actually get built.
Stay tuned for part 2 on 25 February, which will examine the expansion of the S&DR up to 1830.
About the speaker
Richard Barber was born and brought up in Darlington and his childhood playgrounds included Darlington shed, North Road works and many other railway locations. He was a template maker by trade but became involved as a Welding and Corrosion Inspector on such works as the Humber Bridge, the QE2 Metro bridge across the River Tyne in Newcastle, the Thames Barrier and some of the chemical and nuclear installations around the country and a boiler for a working replica of Rocket.
Retirement has allowed Richard to become a volunteer at Locomotion in the Rail Ops and Conservation teams, and also to put together talks and presentation of the long-gone rail scene.
