Rocket footplate experience

Explore how one of the world's first steam locomotives runs by riding the footplate and talking with the crew.

Journey back to the early days of steam locomotion with a rare opportunity to ride on the footplate of our working replica of Stephenson’s Rocket and talk with the driver and fireman.

You will experience real steam operations on the footplate of Rocket whilst it pulls our passenger steam rides twice up and down our demonstration line. Numbers are limited and pre-booking is essential.

Participants must be over 18 and physically fit to climb on and off the locomotive, with no medical conditions that would impede their ability to take part.

Due to the nature of the experience, participants are advised that they are likely to be in contact with oil, soot and dirt from the locomotive and therefore white and light-coloured garments should be avoided. We recommend wearing long sleeved natural fibre clothing and trousers, and sturdy non-heeled footwear.

Please arrive at the platform at least 10 minutes before the experience begins. Latecomers may not be admitted.

What if it’s raining or bad weather?

As Rocket is a historic rail locomotive with an open cab, please dress for the prevailing weather conditions. In the event of heavy rain or extreme weather conditions, it may be necessary to suspend operations for the safety of passengers and crew. In these circumstances, a full refund will be provided.

For more information to help plan your day, please see our visit page.

Please note that this event is taking place at Locomotion, Shildon (County Durham).

Terms and Conditions

  • Under no circumstances will the participant be permitted to take part if under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Participants must obey the instructions given by the Rail Operations crew at all times, including being instructed when it is safe to get on or off the locomotive. In the unlikely instance of an emergency situation, await instruction from the onboard crew.
  • Locomotion reserves the right to refuse access onto the footplate if the participant is in violation of any of these conditions, and no refunds will be issued.
  • Locomotion cannot be held responsible for damage to clothing or footwear during the experience
