The railway line

Our railway follows the line of the original Stockton & Darlington railway and plays host to steam rides and shunting demonstrations throughout the year.

Step back in time to the birth of Shildon as the 'cradle of the railways' and the world's first true railway town. Following the same route that the first steam locomotives hauling coal wagons travelled on the Stockton & Darlington Railway, our railway line reveals the importance of both the coal and rail industries in Shildon's industrial heritage.

See working engines in action with our shunting demos, or climb aboard yourself for a ride behind one of our historic steam locomotives.
