October half term

Inspire the family this October half term at Locomotion, with a hands-on locomotive building challenge and an impressive array of engineering marvels.

Things to do this October half term

Design and build your own battery-powered locomotive in our hands-on family activity Electric Engines.

Work with your group in this interactive session where you will build and test different circuits. Then use your new skills to work together to design and build your own Electric Engine to take home.

How to take part in Electric Engines

Sessions last 30 minutes and run from 11.30–14.00. Suitable for ages 7+.

You'll need a general admission ticket to get in the museum (free, but donations are hugely appreciated), and an Electric Engines ticket (also free). Please note availability is limited for Electric Engines, so pre-booking well in advance is recommended.

What else can I do at the museum?

Inside the Collection Building we have a lovely lineup of locos for you to look at—including the mighty Deltic prototype, the futuristic (in the 1970s) APT-E tilting train and George and Robert Stephenson's Locomotion No 1—the first steam locomotive to haul passengers on a public railway.

The Railway Heroes exhibition will also be back on display, and our play areas are open for kids to burn off some energy. Head to the café for hot drinks, snacks and meals, and check out our shop for great gifts, toys and models.
