Come along to Locomotion this October half term and you can do something a bit different.

Alongside our usual lineup of lustrous locomotives and interesting objects from the railways, we're running two hands-on outdoor activities for families to enjoy.

Process your own photo

2026 October and 29 October – 4 November from 11.0015.00
Location: Front gallery space

Discover how a film negative is formed and processed within a camera and get a closer look at the changing seasons outside.

Gather up items you want to use in your picture before arranging them for an exciting photo and heading to our film processing station to bring your picture to life. You'll also find out what vegetation and wildlife lives alongside Britain's railways and how it changes through the year.

Outdoor exploration

2021 October and 3–4 November at 11.00, 13.00 and 14.00

Head outdoors to learn about the seasons and have some fun with nature in this activity which will fuel imaginations.

Led by one of our Explainers, participants will find out what changes occur between seasons and how animals respond to these changes. How will you fare in our Not a Stick challenge?
