Historic building tours

Immerse yourself in the history of the world’s first railway town, and join our knowledgeable volunteers on a tour around our historic buildings.

Find out more about each building and how it contributed to the town’s success as the ‘cradle of the railways’. These buildings and structures tell the story of Shildon’s role as home of the Stockton & Darlington Railway Works.

A general admission ticket is required for entry.

Soho Shed

Open 13.30–15.30 on 15, 17 and 18 September

Look inside the Soho Shed—the earliest surviving industrial building in Shildon. Here you’ll find some of the oldest objects at Locomotion, including the locomotive Nelson and several early chaldron wagons.

All visitors are welcome to access Soho Shed while it's open. Please ask at the welcome desk if you need any more information.

Please note that access into the other historic buildings is not currently available.
