Flying Scotsman on display

A special treat for visitors.

World-famous steam locomotive Flying Scotsman is currently on display inside Main Hall at the moment.

Get up close to a true legend which has travelled the world and celebrated its 100th birthday in 2023.

It might be 100 years old but Scotsman is no slouch—it was the first loco to be officially recorded at a speed over 100mph, setting the record in November 1934.

On days when we have enough volunteers available, we can also provide cab access.

There's loads more info about Flying Scotsman on the National Railway Museum website.

Flying Scotsman in 2025

Flying Scotsman will remain operational on the main line and is scheduled for rail tours and heritage railway visits in 2025, with details to be confirmed soon. The latest updates on future displays and touring schedules will be provided on the Flying Scotsman section of the National Railway Museum website.

The National Railway Museum in York and Locomotion in Shildon cannot guarantee Flying Scotsman’s location unless it is officially on display.

At times, the locomotive may be on-site for maintenance, repairs, or storage, during which visibility cannot be assured.
