At Locomotion you'll receive a warm welcome to our family-friendly museum packed with beautiful locomotives and railway-related objects. Admission and parking are free.

Build a bird box

Free, but places are limited

Join an explainer to get busy building a bird box to take home with you. Limited to one bird box per household. Ask at the Welcome Desk for more details.

Forest School Activities

Join Sc.Out.Ed for fun outdoor activities. Please ask at the Welcome Desk on arrival.

Train rides

£3 per person, under-5s free

Blow off the cobwebs with a fun passenger ride on our railway line hauled by our diesel loco. Head to the Welcome Desk to get your tickets.

Flying Scotsman's 100th birthday

Friday 24, Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 February
Just drop in

Flying Scotsman isn't at our museum yet, but you can still celebrate the world-famous loco's centenary—create a birthday card or build a model in our make-and-take activity.

More activities

We also have trail sheets and a bird-themed origami activity available every day.

We also have a new exhibition called Innovation Platform, currently showcasing autonomous technology.

DON'T FORGET...

...our lovely lineup of locos, including the mighty Deltic prototype and a 1970s vision of the future—the APT-E tilting train. George and Robert Stephenson’s Locomotion No. 1 is also on display, the first steam locomotive to haul passengers on a public railway.

Our play areas are open for kids to burn off some energy—our outdoor play area has been completely renewed.
