Heritage Open Days 2018

This programme of talks and tours offered a behind-the-scenes look into the operation of a steam locomotive.

Part of the nationwide Heritage Open Days project, this event gave you the chance to learn more about how a steam locomotive works and explore Locomotion’s Conservation Workshop, where locomotives and other vehicles are restored.

Operating a steam locomotive

11.00–13.00 daily, just drop in

Take a close-up look at the workings of a steam locomotive in this free session and learn more about how it is operated from our knowledgeable volunteers.

You'll get to see inside the smokebox of Eustace Forth, explore how a compound engine works with our interactive model and peer inside Green Arrow's firebox. Our stewards will also be on hand to explain how all of the controls at the helm of the locomotive work.

This workshop is open to all ages, but technical details are aimed at an adult audience.

Behind the scenes of our workshop

14.00 daily, except Friday 14 September, limited availability—tickets must be pre-booked
