Railway Revolution: The Stockton & Darlington Railway

Explore how coal, steam and rail transformed the world we know.

Pre-booking is required.

On 27 September 1825, County Durham witnessed a groundbreaking event that transformed the world. For the first time, people could travel on a public railway powered by a steam engine, thanks to a new law. This revolutionised the way coal was moved and sparked a global transportation revolution.

Enjoy a presentation that explores how coal was transported before the Stockton and Darlington Railway and the profound impact this railway had on the UK and the world. Afterwards, take part in a mini tour led by one of our knowledgeable volunteers, where students will get an up-close look at some of our historic locomotives.

This package offers a hands-on learning experience that brings history to life, exploring the early days of railway transport and its lasting influence on the modern world.
