Case study: Catterick railway camp

Come explore Catterick's forgotten railway, a vital military lifeline built to support 40,000 soldiers.

Pre-booking is required.

Did you know that Catterick was once home to a vital military railway? It all began in 1908 when Lieutenant General Robert Baden-Powell proposed a military camp in Catterick. By 1916, the first of 40,000 soldiers had arrived, using the site as a launching point for deployments across the world.

To support this huge operation, the Catterick Camp Military Railway was built—playing a crucial role in transporting troops and equipment. Incredibly, this railway even ran through the middle of a roundabout! But what became of it?

Join us for a short presentation to uncover the fascinating story of the railway and its impact. Then, take part in a mini tour with one of our knowledgeable volunteers, where you'll get up close to some of the locomotives that once powered this historic route.
