Locomotion is now part of the Science Museum Group, the world’s leading group of science museums.
You will see that some aspects of our public programme are changing, bringing our activity in line with the Science Museum Group’s mission to inspire the next generation of scientists, inventors and engineers.
We will continue to offer an engaging and inspiring programme of special events and exhibitions throughout the year, but the nature of those events is changing. We are committed to doing more to tell the unique stories of Shildon, the world’s first railway town. We will be doing more to showcase and tell the stories of our unique collection of railway vehicles. We will also be doing more to inspire our visitors to get involved in science, technology and engineering.
There will be fewer of some of some of the events visitors have enjoyed in the past, but Locomotion will continue to deliver a vibrant programme which promotes our railway heritage, model railways, science and engineering, and our unique local history. We will also continue to benefit from items on tour from across the wider Science Museum Group as we did with Tim Peake’s Spacecraft and Flying Scotsman.
Look out for Steam Season from May to September 2018, when our inspiring programme of events, exhibitions and activities will invite visitors to explore the power of steam. Steam Season will begin with the Festival of Steam on May 5–7 and will continue throughout the summer, ending with the Autumn Steam Gala on Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 September.
